Antenatal care brings together the monthly consultations, the ultrasound scans, the blood tests and the preparation for birth. Being cared for by the same doctor from beginning to end saves you re-explaining your history at every appointment, and makes it possible to anticipate what needs anticipating.

Advice

• Keep all your reports in one file, brought to each consultation.
• Report without delay: bleeding, painful contractions, fever, or reduced movements from the baby.
• Questions about your body, tiredness and sex during pregnancy have their place in the consultation.

How often are the consultations?

Generally one a month until the seventh month, then more closely spaced until term - adjusted according to how the pregnancy progresses.

Does the care include the birth?

Yes, when you wish: the antenatal care and the birth can both be provided by the same doctor.
