Obstetric ultrasound scans mark out the pregnancy: dating in the first trimester, anatomy in the second, growth in the third. They check the baby's development, the position of the placenta and the amount of fluid, and each one is discussed with you during the examination.

Advice

• Wear something that makes it easy to uncover your abdomen.
• The first-trimester scan has a precise window, between 11 and 14 weeks: it is best not to move it.
• Someone is welcome to come with you, unless there is a particular constraint.

How many scans during the pregnancy?

Three are recommended in a pregnancy with no particular issues. Others can be added if a situation calls for it.

Can you find out the baby's sex?

Yes, generally from the second-trimester scan onwards - and only if you want to know.
