Perineoplasty

Repair of the perineum, on its own or following a vaginoplasty.

Perineoplasty is a surgical procedure that repairs and strengthens the perineum, the area between the vaginal opening and the anus. It may be offered after childbirth, a tear or an episiotomy, where there is a painful scar, laxity or widening of the vaginal opening. It aims to restore the anatomy and to improve comfort as well as sexual function. It can be performed on its own or combined with vaginoplasty. Performed as a day case, under local anaesthetic.

Advice

• Avoid prolonged sitting and straining (constipation) while healing
• Observe the period indicated before resuming intercourse
• A diet that prevents constipation makes recovery easier

It sits in a natural fold of the perineum and fades gradually; it becomes barely visible once healed.
