Vaginal or intimate dryness

Tightness, irritation, discomfort during intercourse: intimate dryness has identifiable causes, and a graduated range of answers.

It does not only affect women after the menopause, and it is not always solved with a cream.

What it is

Vaginal dryness is a reduction in the natural hydration of the intimate mucous membranes. It may be occasional or long-standing, and it shows itself as a feeling of tightness, burning or discomfort, particularly during intercourse.

Where it comes from

It is most often linked to a fall in oestrogen levels: menopause, the postpartum period, breastfeeding, or certain treatments (contraception, chemotherapy, anti-hormonal therapy). Stress, certain soaps or overly harsh hygiene can also weaken the mucosa.

What it changes in everyday life

Beyond the discomfort, long-standing dryness increases the risk of irritation and small lesions, and can end up dampening desire through apprehension of pain. It is never something to be accepted in silence.
