A darkening of the skin in the intimate area, common and harmless, but which sometimes weighs on self-image.
It is one of the most frequent concerns in consultation, and one of the least often raised.
Intimate hyperpigmentation is a darkening of the skin of the labia majora, the groin fold or the perianal area, linked to a greater production of melanin in that place.
Friction (tight underwear, hair removal), perspiration, hormonal variations (pregnancy, contraception) or a natural predisposition of the skin are the most common causes.
It is a normal variation in pigmentation, with no medical consequence. But it can be a source of embarrassment or self-consciousness, sometimes to the point of avoiding certain intimate situations.
