Vaginal pain during intercourse

Burning, tenderness on contact, pain during intercourse: the vulva is a sensitive area that deserves to be examined, not ignored.

Vaginal pain during intercourse that lasts is never trivial, and does not have to be accepted as such.

What it is

Vulvar pain covers a very wide range of sensations: burning, tingling, tenderness at the slightest contact or deep pain. This is known as dyspareunia, or painful sexual intercourse: superficial dyspareunia is pain during penetration, at the entrance to the vagina, while deep dyspareunia is felt further in, during intercourse. It may be constant or triggered by a specific contact (underwear, intercourse, a tampon).

Where it comes from

Recurrent infections, dryness and atrophy of the tissues, a skin condition such as lichen sclerosus, or hypersensitivity of the vaginal vestibule are the most frequent causes.

What it changes in everyday life

Endured in silence, this pain weighs on intimate life, self-confidence and sometimes everyday life (sitting down, clothing). Its cause can be looked for and, in the great majority of cases, the pain can be relieved.
